Jon Pilkington (b. 1990, Liverpool) graduated with an MFA in Painting from Chelsea College of Art and Design (Distinction), London in 2013 and lives and works in London. Pilkington's work explores abstraction through figuration, investigating the role of the motif and the relationship it holds to drawing in contemporary abstract painting. His seductive explorations of colour are informed by clarity and confidence through painterly application. These paintings offer propositions through simplification and rejection, where there becomes a focus on the reduction of motifs and references, suggesting a narrative by employing elements of primitivism in a bold, honest and playful way. Paintings teeter between the unresolved and the overworked. This body of work combines the urgency of drawing with a painterly surface.
