Dancing at the Edge of the World
Sara Zanin Gallery, Rome 7 Feb - 13 Jul 2020 In this exhibition that appropriates the title of Ursula K. Le Guin’s 1989 non-fiction collection, Dancing at the Edge of the World, the works of ten female-identifying artists create a centre of subversive feminist activity where the body – fleshy, often leaky and sometimes desirous - is omnipresent but never separated from the mind. The artists in this exhibition invade their own privacy to explore embodiment and representation in an anarchic and self-realising strategy of empowerment. Artists include: Saelia Aparicio, Charlotte Colbert, Monika Grabuschnigg, Zsófia Keresztes, Alexi Marshall, Florence Peake, Proudick (Lindsey Mendick and Paloma Proudfoot), Megan Rooney and Eve Stainton.

Evy Jokhova | Staccato
House of St Barnabas, London 9 Nov 2016 - 4 Jan 2017 Marcelle Joseph Projects proudly presents Staccato, a site-specific interactive audio-visual installation by London-based multi-disciplinary artist Evy Jokhova in a Gothic Revival chapel in the heart of Soho built by British architect Joseph Clarke between 1862 and 1864. Exploring the interconnection between music, movement and ceremonial architecture, Jokhova has created three new sculptural works accompanied by an original musical score made in collaboration with James Metcalfe. Her new work attempts to examine the relationship between sound, image and form, using the architecture of the chapel and its specific acoustics in conjunction with a series of sculptural objects made from sound insulation foam, mirror card, perspex and wood and an avant-garde musical score. Two pillar-like sculptures, mimicking the architectural details of the space but with a Modernist twist, will inhabit two of the four apses in the church and a third sculpture will hang from the ceiling. The musical score, made by first creating drawings that systematise the architectural model and plans of the chapel and then transcribing these drawings into music, will emanate from various speakers and intrigue the viewer with its abstract, experimental sounds. The title of this exhibition, Staccato, refers to the 2013 article by American architectural theorist and landscape architect Charles Jencks entitled “When Architecture Becomes Music” where Jencks considers the inter-columniation of buildings as a staccato composition, suggesting that structures composed of singular solid forms placed at regular intervals ‘induce the feeling of finality by the absolute contrast” between solid and void and light and darkness. Selma Parlour | Parlour Games
House of St Barnabas, London 7 Oct 2016 - 23 Jun 2017 Marcelle Joseph Projects proudly presents Parlour Games, a site-specific, semi-permanent installation of new paintings by London-based artist Selma Parlour. These new abstract works, created with a luscious, glowing colour palette, are situated within the 1750’s rococo panelling of the Soho Room in the Grade I-listed House of St Barnabas, producing a visual cornucopia of colour, line and form. Parlour’s paintings are an exercise in minimalist abstract perfection, meticulously rendered through thin films of transparent oil on linen such that the brushstrokes are invisible and the resulting imagery looks printed. The flawless precision of her surfaces, the flatness of her imagery and the trompe l’oeil illusion created by her use of shading are the artist’s signature touches. Central to her work is also the repetition of shapes that reference architectural geometries or a two-dimensional stage space that curtails fictive distance as much as it represents it. As for the artist’s use of colour, Parlour extracts the oil binder from her paint so that the texture of the colour is parched like chalk pastel. This method of application produces a veil of colour that glows as if lit from behind, reminding the viewer of painting’s social function as a window to another world. This exhibition is the first solo presentation by Parlour after being named one of the five prizewinners of the John Moores Painting Prize 2016. Read more -
